Formula 1: Against The Odds

Ferrari For Pole in Melbourne

Anyone who reads the blogs in my blogroll will have noticed that there has been a good spirit of collaboration in the build up to the 2008 Formula One season. However I have decided to go one better and just steal someone else’s idea…

The first bet that I have placed this season is backing Ferrari to secure pole position in Saturday’s qualifying session. This is heavily based on the argument made by Costanza in his post on The RX Forum. The way I see it:

  • Kimi dominated here last year and took pole.
  • Massa was a bit of a qualifying specialist last year (six poles).
  • The Ferrari looks to be the fastest car coming out of winter testing.
  • The removal of driver aids is expected to pose Massa fewer problems in qualifying than in races.
  • Kovalainen has told us he is not going for pole.

  • Hamilton is a strong qualifier (also took six poles).
  • We will have a better idea of the relative pace of the cars after this weekend.
  • Minor tweaks to qualifying format to contend with.

Costanza has also identified the best way of placing this bet by dutching the two drivers at their best price with different firms. It looks like his money is down though as the prices that he has posted are gone. There is plenty of 4/5 still available though and at this price I have backed the pros to outweigh the cons.
